HALLOWEEN COUNTDOWN! What better way to spruce up a marriage than by getting terrorized by backwoods psychos? Bickering marrieds finalizing their divorce take a shortcut off the interstate & get lost in the boonies! Tack on a vague back-story about a perished child of theirs & a wife dozy on Zoloft & Prozac dreaming hubby’s trying to kill her to give them some weight & we’re off to the races! The heading for this Motion Picture Purgatory which originally appeared in a 2007 issue of The Montreal Mirror was “Pretty Vacant!” As always; the original art’s for sale @ 100 bucks. HALLOWEEN COUNTDOWN! Boris Karloff, Basil Rathbone & Eric Von Zipper! Fetish alert! How’s THIS for the ultimate form of nudity? The “ghost” in “Ghost in the Invisible Bikini” is literally just that; a sexy girl whose bikini is see-through, as in; you can SEE RIGHT THROUGH her bikini out her body like a nuclear blast thermal radiation tan line! If YOU don’t wear this as your costume this Halloween, I WILL! With healthy messages like you shouldn’t wear glasses but you should wear a bikini to seduce yer guy! Incessant unfunny slapstick gags & cartoon sound FX diffuse crooked murderous goings on but unresolved maliciousness leaves a peculiar icky aftertaste, a true testament to the kinda brainless escapism that was becoming increasingly outta synch with the temperament of the times! The heading for this Motion Picture Purgatory which originally appeared in a 2007 issue of The Montreal Mirror was “Now THAT’S what I call a Halloween costume!!” As always; the original art’s for sale @ 100 bucks. HALLOWEEN COUNTDOWN! After an hour’s worth of  bad omens, ponderous expository reminiscences, & needless fleshing out of secondary characters destined for unresolved eradication, BOOGEYMAN momentarily kicks into a promising MULHOLLAND DRIVE (2001) kinda space-time continuum/warp once the hero discovers he can travel thru measures of temporal/spatial boundaries from one bogeyman gateway to another (dark closets, under beds, etc…). But it’s short-lived so the film can explode into the requisite plethora of dizzying hallucinations, CGI morphing, trendy undercranking, overcranking, jump-cuts, swish-pans, & jerky handheld camera to diffuse plot sloppiness. The heading for this Motion Picture Purgatory which originally appeared in a 2005 issue of The Montreal Mirror was “Skeletors™ in the Closet!” As always; the original art’s for sale @ 100 bucks. More deets below or contact me for info. (To see image full-sized, click on it to open in a new window & use the magnify function).

HALLOWEEN COUNTDOWN! Fancy FX filler camera moves constantly performing colonoscopies in & outta all manner of flesh-holes, attempting to enhance the squirm factor, come across more like the throbbing kaleidoscopic contents of a gynecologist’s speculum in this generic gory vehicle for hulking villainous wrestling superstar Kane, produced for him by “World Wrestling Entertainment” & helmed by director-for-hire Greg Dark (XXX New Wave Hookers, & Devil in Miss Jones 4)! The heading for this Motion Picture Purgatory which originally appeared in a 2006 issue of The Montreal Mirror was “See No Logic!” As always; the original art’s for sale @ 100 bucks. HALLOWEEN COUNTDOWN! Haven’t the “foggiest” idea what’s going on here? Yer not alone! Up until the mid-90’s even a hint of pubic hair or genitalia in Japan was grounds for arrest & legal prosecution (maximum 2-year sentence), so offending areas were obscured either with black bars, or most commonly, by fogging! It was self-imposed by the studios, not an outside agency, so uncensored prints simply don’t exist! In this film it almost adds to the surrealism! The heading for this Motion Picture Purgatory which originally appeared in a 2010 issue of The Montreal Mirror was “Fogging Flogging!” As always; the original art’s for sale @ 100 bucks. So much has been made of the “gayness” of “A Nightmare on Elm Street 2: Freddy’s Revenge” over the years that a documentary’s now even in the works about the film’s homoerotic subtext called “Scream, Queen!: My Nightmare on Elm Street.” Here’s my original review of it published during my first wave at free weekly The Montreal Mirror in the 80’s, where I was hoping the franchise would go even further, spawning “a series drawing blood out of every imaginable danger-filled sex kink & perversion in existence (maybe even inventing a few new ones in the process), creating a forum for some of the weirdest special effects to come.” (To see image full-sized, click on it to open in a new window & use the magnify function).

Legendary Vancouver zinester & smut peddler Robin Bougie is coming to Montreal! He’ll be here from Wednesday July 29 to Sunday August 2 for the last leg of Fantasia launching his latest Cinema Sewer book Volume Five! He’ll be sharing the merch table with me at the Hall Theater, also selling copies of his other FAB Press books Graphic Thrills & Cinema Sewer volumes 1 through 4. So don’t miss this rare opportunity to come grill him face-to-face on all aspects of degenerate film! And if you ask him nicely, maybe he’ll even scribble a doodle in one of your purchases! The heading for this Motion Picture Purgatory which originally appeared in a 2007 issue of The Montreal Mirror was “Crucial Compendium of Craptastic Crud!” As always; the original art’s for sale @ 100 bucks. BTW, I’ll be selling FAB Press books as well as my own for the duration of Montreal’s Fantasia International Film Festival the next couple of weeks (Concordia Hall Theatre, 1455 de Maisonneuve west). Having sold out of Motion Picture Purgatory Volume 2 years ago I decided to have the remaining few boxes shipped from the UK. Pass by to complete your collection & say hi!

Since the free weekly I was in, The Montreal Mirror, folded in 2012 (as are all print weeklies everywhere), Motion Picture Purgatory has been appearing more in actual books than anywhere else! Case in point; “Recovering 1940s Horror Cinema: Traces of a Lost Decade,” which is being launched as part of Fantasia this Wednesday, July 29, from 5 to 7pm at cafe-bar Kafein, right by the film fest (1429 Rue Bishop), with some copies available at a discounted price! My contribution, an examination of Bela Lugosi’s last vehicle, Devil Bat, is one of the only “images” in this gorgeous, highly academic textbook! Certainly the only cartoon! Come say hi, & then consider checking out a 16mm tie-in screening of Edgar G. Ulmer’s Bluebeard (1944) afterwards at the Visual Arts Building, 7:30pm, #VA-114, 1395 René Lévesque Ouest, corner Crescent! This month marks the THIRTIETH ANNIVERSARY of Motion Picture Purgatory! That’s right; I actually started my movie review strip at The Montreal Mirror in July of 1985. I got kicked out in ‘88 when they decided to blame the perceived misogyny of some of the horror films I was writing about on me. But ten years later, after a complete change in editorship, I got rehired & continued till the weekly was snuffed out in 2012. Here’s the original art of one of my earliest reviews published during my first tenure in ‘85. I guess I wasn’t big on “Spoiler Alerts” back then, but I was already featuring my long-running “Actual Quotes.” As always; the original art’s for sale @ 100 bucks. More deets below or contact me for info. (To see image full-sized, click on it to open in a new window & use the magnify function).
