Already a music sensation when he did this, an insanely inordinate amount of time is spent getting beauty shots of him terrorizing housewife Cay Forrester, who also happened to write the screenplay (rape fantasy, anyone?)! Coming off more ham than trained actor just adds to the creepiness & unpredictability, pursing his lips too often as if stalling for time to remember lines, randomly smashing his victim’s belongings with mock gesticulations that are part twitch, part swish, & 100% snotty, contemptuous, & ignorant: a dangerous & volatile combination! When things reach a boiling point he even picks up little Ron Howard as a bullet-shield! I wonder how much he was adlibbing! Actor Bob Crane (star of hit 60’s sitcom Hogan’s Heroes) was bludgeoned to death with a tripod under mysterious circumstances in 1978! Paul Schrader directs Greg Kinnear as Crane & Willem Dafoe as buddy & murder suspect John Carpenter in this queasy biopic detailing the pair’s seedy tumble into sex addiction! Stigma then & now: would Crane have fared better w/cybersex? Such an easy target you gotta wonder if it was approached as a pisstake or a true anti-addiction trope? Brand new MAXI Motion Picture Purgatory! This one’s a commission I just completed for a private client about Montreal’s notorious grindhouse theater of yore, The Cristal! As such, what we have here is a raw scan of the B&W pen & ink art, no digitally enhanced gradients or colors, suitable for framing, exactly as delivered! Try reading THIS one on your hand-held device! You might think I’m deliberately cramming a million details into my splash-pages on purpose because of my contempt for the thumbnailization of culture we’re currently suffering through, but I actually started pulling this stunt back in the 80’s when free weekly The Montreal Mirror reduced the size of my comics to make space for their ads! I was so annoyed I decided to start handing in impossibly ornate drawings so they’d look like postage stamps once printed & maybe change their minds to gimme more space! Hence this is how the original format for my Maxi Motion Picture Purgatories got birthed! This installment manages to touch on topless female 70’s Asian kung fu flicks, XXX Through the Looking Glass (1976), Night of the Living Dead (1968), Pearl White from Perils of Pauline (1914), Boogie Nights (1997), Marilyn Chambers in David Cronenberg’s Rabid (1977), John Carpenter’s The Thing (1982), Montreal’s Club Soda, gentrification, molesters, winos, & Shopsy hotdogs among other things! If Quentin Terantino’s Death Proof (2007) was a “chick-flick” as seen thru the eyes of a male, Anna Biller’s feature film directorial debut Viva is just the opposite using the same inspirational sources; low budget 70’s exploitation! Biller was the director, producer, writer, editor, set & costume designer & lead actress (!) of this remarkable epic, approaching the making of it as a gallery artist would; one installation at a time over several years! And it’s a musical to boot! Tho she was too young to have fully grasped firsthand the era she grew up in being emulated, she says this worked to her advantage cuz it made her bring a similarly innocent POV she claims most of the films back then were largely driven by, clumsily breaking taboos & forging virgin sexual frontiers! Scathing early commentary on easy gun access & mass murder based on 1966 University of Texas killer Charles Whitman! “I’m an anachronism,” complains aging horror star Boris (Frankenstein) Karloff (playing “himself” in one of his last roles) as he shows his director a routine headline from the news (played by actual director Peter Bogdanovich); “Youth Kills 6 In Supermarket!” He announces his retirement but grudgingly agrees to make a final personal appearance at the premiere of his last outmoded Goth flick in a local drive-in where he comes face-to-face with the horror of today’s mass murderer. He is not impressed. Little Rodney Bingenheimer’s mom was an autograph hound so he followed suit, but as a teen she dumped him in front of superstar Connie Stevens’ door & they stopped seeing each other for years! But Connie wasn’t home so he wandered over to mid-sixties magnet for runaway kids; Hollywood’s Sunset Strip, & got mommied by similarly starry-eyed young girls hanging out (he’s the first boy that super-groupie Pamela Des Barres ever kissed), his lifelong career as professional hanger-on thus begun! After his evolution to nightclub impresario (his “English Disco” introduced 70’s glam rock but had to close down when actual disco took over) & eventual radio host, the tables got turned! After years of mismanagement, drug, & alcohol abuse, drag-queen-emulating glam rock pioneers & seminal punk band The New York Dolls broke up in 1975 leaving member Arthur “Killer” Kane (named after his “killer” bass lines & a nemesis of Buck Rogers) to eke out an existence on his own in L.A.! He didn’t fare too well & hit rock bottom in the eighties after seeing former band-mate David Johansen in a bit part in Scrooged (1988)!
