This project has come a long way since my first rough Rube Goldbergesque conceptual thumbnails a year ago (see image below). I’ve been working very hard on this with producer Ari Cohen of Big Cheeks Studio on & off since 2015 & now I’m incredibly pleased to announce that my new animated short Building 108 will be having its world premiere on the big screen at the prestigious Fantasia International Film Festival this Saturday, July 16 at 5:15 PM. And I couldn’t be happier that it’s opening for Anna Biller’s new film The Love Witch since I’m already a huge fan of her first feature Viva! This is going to be an amazing screening! Get your tickets now HERE!

We’re hoping this initial pilot episode develops into a series of some sort. Here’s our official synopsis: “Building 108 chronicles the misadventures of a ragtag trio of young broke mutant musicians who live & rehearse in a dilapidated building in a post-apocalyptic predatory urban environment that has pesky hazards like bumbling hucksters, zombies, & aliens from other planets & dimensions around every corner. Each episode is based around the charmingly quirky way the crew fends off a different antagonist to their routine of trying to make ends meet and playing music at their neighborhood hangouts.”

Montreal Music Trivia: Did you know that the theme song for Building 108 was written & performed by one of the longest lasting post-punk bands anywhere, The American Devices? And the voice(s) of Building 108’s character “Cobweb” is/are by Sacral Nerves singer Esther Splett? BTW come see my band Sacral Nerves play with Ishi Tishi & Nobro this Monday night, July 18 at Bar Le Ritz PDB (179 Jean Talon West)!

Braindead,” one of the characters from Building 108 says; “Come see my new movie!”

The “O” stands for Orgasm! CBC’s 2005 take on internet porn! “The internet’s affecting human sexuality as profoundly as the birth control pill,” we’re told; “arguably more dangerous than crack cocaine!” Cybersex gets compared to 1950’s Asimovian sci-fi construct Solaria where agoraphobics used to dealing only with facsimiles of fellow humans get violently ill at the thought of an actual person within view! The heading for this Motion Picture Purgatory which originally appeared in a 2005 issue of The Montreal Mirror was “Browbeat yer meat!” As always; the original art’s for sale @ 100 bucks. Scathing early commentary on easy gun access & mass murder based on 1966 University of Texas killer Charles Whitman! “I’m an anachronism,” complains aging horror star Boris (Frankenstein) Karloff (playing “himself” in one of his last roles) as he shows his director a routine headline from the news (played by actual director Peter Bogdanovich); “Youth Kills 6 In Supermarket!” He announces his retirement but grudgingly agrees to make a final personal appearance at the premiere of his last outmoded Goth flick in a local drive-in where he comes face-to-face with the horror of today’s mass murderer. He is not impressed. The heading for this Motion Picture Purgatory which originally appeared in a 2000 issue of The Montreal Mirror was “Take that, modern-day atrocities!” (To see image full-sized, click on it to open in a new window & use the magnify function).

MPP ART 4 SALE! Little Rodney Bingenheimer’s mom was an autograph hound so he followed suit, but as a teen she dumped him in front of superstar Connie Stevens’ door & they stopped seeing each other for years! But Connie wasn’t home so he wandered over to mid-sixties magnet for runaway kids; Hollywood’s Sunset Strip, & got mommied by similarly starry-eyed young girls hanging out (he’s the first boy that super-groupie Pamela Des Barres ever kissed), his lifelong career as professional hanger-on thus begun! After his evolution to nightclub impresario (his “English Disco” introduced 70’s glam rock but had to close down when actual disco took over) & eventual radio host, the tables got turned! The heading for this Motion Picture Purgatory which originally appeared in a 2004 issue of The Montreal Mirror was “A Hanger-On Encroached Upon’s A Hanger-On That’s Not Foregone!” As always; the original art’s for sale @ 100 bucks. MPP ART 4 SALE! “Thrill to the whores of Babylon as they eat of Jizzus Crust’s flesh & drink of his cum in the very first XXX biblical epic” screams the DIY Cumming of Jizzus DVD box art! Zinester extraordinaire Robin (Cinema Sewer) Bougie & Chelsea Chainsaw (AKA Jessica Vile from one of my fave Bougie chapbooks My Secret Cockupation) teamed up in the mid-twentyhundreds to create their first porno flick; he as producer/soundman/gopher, & she as directress! “I spent my childhood & a good portion of my adulthood confused by these bible stories! I’m still fascinated & study them outta personal interest! The sex in our movie’s consensual & an expression of love in our own sleazy secular way!” –Chelsea Chainsaw. The heading for this Motion Picture Purgatory which originally appeared in a 2010 issue of The Montreal Mirror was “The power of Christ CUMpels you!” As always; the original art’s for sale @ 100 bucks. MPP ART 4 SALE! After years of mismanagement, drug, & alcohol abuse, drag-queen-emulating glam rock pioneers & seminal punk band The New York Dolls broke up in 1975 leaving member Arthur “Killer” Kane (named after his “killer” bass lines & a nemesis of Buck Rogers) to eke out an existence on his own in L.A.! He didn’t fare too well & hit rock bottom in the eighties after seeing former band-mate David Johansen in a bit part in Scrooged (1988)! Decades later, pop star Morrissey asks the band to regroup & play London’s Royal Albert Hall! The heading for this Motion Picture Purgatory which originally appeared in a 2006 issue of The Montreal Mirror was “Church of the Latter Day Dolls!” As always; the original art’s for sale @ 100 bucks. MPP ART 4 SALE! The “North American Man/Boy Love Association” or NAMBLA as it’s better known formed in ‘79 & reached 1500 members at the time of this doc (1994)! Besides the derogatory title (slang for child molester), Chicken Hawk’s pretty impartial as it follows several brazen members & the various persecutions they gotta endure! Authoritative female narration gives historical perspective how ancient civilizations embraced sexual communion with children, like Greeks, Sicilians, & New Guinea tribes who considered semen more potent than mother’s milk! The heading for this Motion Picture Purgatory which originally appeared in a 2010 issue of The Montreal Mirror was “Fowl Play?” As always; the original art’s for sale @ 100 bucks. MPP ART 4 SALE! So how’s about that fracking, huh? See Chevron try to pull the wool over Polish farmers’ eyes by assuring them there’ll be no consequences fracking for shale gas on their ancient pastoral soil, where the air’s so clean the region’s known as the “Lungs of Poland”! But documentary filmmaker Lech (Born to Lose: The Last Rock and Roll Movie) Kowalski knows what can go wrong & demonstrates by ricocheting from Pennsylvania to Europe showing what kinda devastation can happen! The heading for this Motion Picture Purgatory was “‘This Is How Revolutions Start’ -Director Lech Kowalski.” As always; the original art’s for sale @ 100 bucks. MPP ART 4 SALE! I thought Last Days was wonderful but someone who grew up with Nirvana once told me they despised the movie & I said I understood because since I grew up with The Sex Pistols I despised Sid & Nancy (1986)! Chronicling the chronic humdrum of Kurt Cobain’s catastrophic collapse days before blowing his own brains out in 1994, Last Days translates (condenses or stretches, you be the judge) the mundanity of his eternal nod into 97 gloriously lensed minutes of confounding contemplation! Extended footages of the most infuriatingly monotonous & inconsequential elements transform the dreary into inexplicably poignant meditative moments! The heading for this Motion Picture Purgatory which originally appeared in a 2005 issue of The Montreal Mirror was “Irony is Dead!” As always; the original art’s for sale @ 100 bucks. MPP ART 4 SALE! I love drawing cutaways. Blocked from the outside-in by the military, people trapped inside a creaky old building do their darndest to assess the situation by picking at the viscera of fellow victims, gradually piecing together a mutant rabies outbreak! Americanized remake of 2007 Spanish film “[Rec]”!
